Syllabus for Fazil (Pass)

Subject: English (Compulsory)

Total Marks: 100

Aims and objectives of this course :
It is intended to familiarize the students with basic two mechanics of
reading and writing English Language. 
1. Reading comprehension : (Marks: 20)
Learners are expected to read and comprehend general passage or an extract from stories, novels, dramas and poems so that they might be able to develop the understanding of the different usage of the language. Testing items and marks distribution :
a. Answering questions (2×5=10)
b. Giving word-meanings and antonyms (1×5=5)
or, Changing words (e.g. from noun to verb or adjective etc.)
c. Writing summary

2. Writing: (Marks: 35)
a. Situational writing: (Marks: 6)
Writing posters, notices, slogans, memos, advertisements, noting, newspaper reports, press release, certificates etc.
b. Letters and Resume :
Writing informal letters, formal letters, resume, job applications, request letters, complaint letters, letters to the editor, (joining & resignation letters.). (Marks: 7)
c. Paragraphs: (Marks: 7)
Types: Narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, structuring: Topic introducer, topic sentence, developing ideas, restatement. Techniques: Listing, example, space and time, definition and classification, comparison and contrast, cause and effect etc. Using cohesive devices or connectors.
d. Essay writing: (Marks: 15)
Outlining the essay; writing the essay; structuring as introduction developing paragraphs and conclusion; revising and editing.

3. Grammar: (Marks: 35)
Articles, prepositions, phrases, clauses, sentences: simple, complex, compound; transformation of sentences; joining sentences, tenses, framing negatives, questions and question-tags, passive construction, direct and indirect speech, right form of verbs, subject-verb agreement, usage of modal auxiliaries, infinitives, participle, gerund and conditionals.
Testing items and mark distribution : 
a. Filling in the blanks: (using articles, prepositions) (1×5=5)
b. Completing sentences (using phrase, clause)  (1×5=5)
c. Transformation (simple, complex, compound) (1×5=5)
d. Passive construction (1×5=5)
e. Changing direct speech into indirect speech (1×5=5)
f. Framing negatives, questions & question tags (1×5=5)
g Rewriting (using right form of verbs) (1×5=5)

4. Translation: (Marks: 10)
a. Translating into English (Marks: 5)
b. Translating into Bangla (Marks: 5)

প্রশ্নের ধারা ও মানবণ্টন সম্পর্কে আলোচনা

Reading Comprehension : Marks-20

এ অংশে একটি Unseen Comprehension দেওয়া থাকবে এবং তার উপর ভিত্তি করে ৩টি Item (অথবাসহ)-এর প্রশ্ন থাকবে । যার মোট নম্বর থাকবে ১০ + ৫ + ৫ = ২০ । নিম্নে প্রশ্নের ধরন সম্পর্কে একটি সংক্ষিপ্ত বিবরণ দেয়া হলো :

a. Answering questions :

Comprehend শব্দ থেকে ‘Comprehension' শব্দটির উৎপত্তি, যার অর্থ- অনুধাবন বা হৃদয়ঙ্গম করা। শিক্ষার্থীরা প্রদত্ত Passage-টি পড়ে কতটুকু আয়ত্ত করতে পেরেছে তা যাচাই করার জন্য প্রশ্নপত্রে Comprehension Test সন্নিবেশিত করা হয়। এ ধরনের প্রশ্নের উত্তর সংক্ষিপ্ত আকারে নিজের মতো করে লিখতে হয়। প্রদত্ত Passage থেকে সরাসরি কোনো Sentence তুলে দেওয়া যাবে না। এক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্নপত্রে 'Write answer to the following questions' শিরোনামে ৫টি প্রশ্ন থাকবে। প্রতিটিতে ২ নম্বর করে মোট নম্বর থাকবে ১০। অর্থাৎ 2×5=10।

b. Writing word meanings, synonyms or antonyms: 

এক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্নপত্রে প্রদত্ত Unseen passage 'Write down the meanings of the following words and give synonyms / antonyms of them.' শিরোনামে কমপক্ষে ৭টি Word দেওয়া থাকবে। তার মধ্যে ৫টি Word-এর বাংলা অর্থ ও synonyms / antonyms লিখতে হবে। প্রতিটি Word-এর জন্য ১ নম্বর করে মোট নম্বর থাকবে ৫। অর্থাৎ ১×৫=৫ ৷

Or, Changing words : এক্ষেত্রে উপরিউক্ত প্রশ্নের অথবা হিসেবে 'Change the following words as directed and make sentences with them' শিরোনামে কমপক্ষে ৭টি word বা শব্দ দেয়া থাকবে, তন্মধ্যে ৫টি শব্দের Direction বা নির্দেশনানুযায়ী Parts of speech-এর পরিবর্তন করতে হবে এবং পরিবর্তিত Parts of speech দিয়ে ৫টি Sentence রচনা করতে হবে। প্রতিটি Word-এর Parts of Speech পরিবর্তন ও Sentence লেখার জন্য ১ নম্বর করে মোট নম্বর থাকবে ৫। অর্থাৎ ১×৫=৫ ৷

c. Writing summary: 

এ অংশে প্রশ্নপত্রে প্রদত্ত Unseen Passage-টির উপর ‘Write a summary of this passage: শিরোনামে একটি প্রশ্ন দেয়া থাকবে। এ প্রশ্নটির উত্তর লিখতে Passage-টি ভালোভাবে পাঠ করে এর সারাংশ লিখতে বলা হবে। Passage থেকে সরাসরি কোনো Sentence উদ্ধৃত করা যাবে না। মনে রাখতে হবে, Summary কোনোক্রমেই যেন মূল Passage-টির এক-তৃতীয়াংশের বেশি না হয়। এ প্রশ্নের উত্তরের জন্য মোট নম্বর থাকবে ৫।

Writing : Marks - 35

এ অংশে Situational Writing, Letters & Resume, Paragraph ও Essay Writing-এর ওপর ভিত্তি করে মোট ৪টি Item-এর উপর প্রশ্ন থাকবে। যার মোট নম্বর থাকবে 6 +7+7+15 = 35 |

নিচে এগুলো সম্পর্কে সংক্ষিপ্ত আলোচনা করা হলো :

a. Situational writing : 

Situational writing-এর ক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্নপত্রে Posters, Notices, Slogans, Memos, Advertisements, Noting, Newspaper Reports, Press Release ও Certificate ইত্যাদি থেকে যেকোনো একটি Item-এর ওপর প্রশ্ন দেয়া হতে পারে অথবা যেকোনো ৩টি Item-এর মধ্যে একটির উত্তর দিতে বলা হবে। এ প্রশ্নের উত্তরের জন্য মোট নম্বর থাকবে ৬৷

b. Letters & resume : 

এ ক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্নপত্রে Letter ও Application থেকে যেকোনো ১টি প্রশ্ন লিখতে বলা হতে পারে। Resume হলো আমেরিকান ইংলিশ-এ চাকরির ক্ষেত্রে লিখিত, সংক্ষিপ্ত জীবনবৃত্তান্ত । এটি ব্রিটিশ ইংলিশ -এ CV নামে পরিচিত। এ প্রশ্নটির জন্য মোট নম্বর থাকবে ৭ । Letters & Resume অংশে যে বিষয়গুলো সন্নিবেশিত হবে সেগুলো হলো Informal letters, Formal letters, Resume, Job applications, Request letters, Complaint letters, Letters to the editor, Joining letter Resignation letter. এজন্য নম্বর বরাদ্দ থাকবে ৭

c. Paragraphs : 

প্রশ্নপত্রের এ অংশে তিনটি Paragraph দেওয়া থাকবে। তা থেকে যেকোনো একটি বিষয়ের উপর Paragraph লিখতে হবে। Paragraph টি Topic Introducer, Topic Sentence, Developing Ideas Restatement-এর সমন্বয়ে রচনা করতে হবে। Paragraph-টি লেখার জন্য মোট নম্বর থাকবে ৭।

d. Essay writing : 

এ অংশে প্রশ্নপত্রে ৩টি Essay দেওয়া থাকবে। তা থেকে যেকোনো একটির উত্তর লিখতে হবে। Essay-টি লেখার জন্য প্রশ্নপত্রে Outline দেওয়া থাকতে পারে। Essay Writing-এর জন্য মোট নম্বর থাকবে ১৫ ৷

Grammar: Marks-35

ইসলামি আরবি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রদত্ত ফাযিল শ্রেণির ইংরেজি সিলেবাস-এ Grammar অংশে- Articles; Prepositions; Phrases; Clauses; Sentences : Simple, Complex, Compound; Transformation of Sentences; Joining Sentences; Tenses; Framing negatives, Questions and question tags; Passive construction; Direct and Indirect speech; Right form of verbs; Subject-verb agreement; Usage of modal auxiliaries, Infinitives, Participle, Gerund and Conditional সংযোজন করা হয়েছে। এগুলো হতে পরীক্ষায় মোট ৭টি Item-এর প্রশ্ন আসবে।

নিচে এগুলো সম্পর্কে সংক্ষিপ্ত আলোচনা করা হলো :

a. Filling in the blanks ( using articles, prepositions ) : 

এ ক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্নপত্রে সাতটি Detached Sentence দেওয়া থাকবে। প্রতিটি Sentence-এ শূন্যস্থান থাকবে । উপযুক্ত Article অথবা Preposition বসিয়ে যে কোনো ৫টি Sentence সম্পূর্ণ করতে হবে। প্রতিটির জন্য নম্বর থাকবে ১। অর্থাৎ ১×৫=৫ ।

b. Completing sentence (using phrase, clause) : 

এ ক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্নপত্রে সাতটি Detached Sentence দেওয়া থাকবে। প্রতিটি Sentence-ই অসম্পূর্ণ থাকবে। এ অসম্পূর্ণ Sentence-গুলোর মধ্য থেকে পাঁচটি Sentence-কে উপযুক্ত Phrase ও Clause দ্বারা সম্পূর্ণ করতে হবে। এর জন্য নম্বর থাকবে ৫। অর্থাৎ ১×৫=৫।

c. Transformation (simple, complex, compound) : 

এ ক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্নপত্রে সাতটি Sentence দেওয়া থাকবে। Sentence-গুলোকে নির্দেশনা অনুযায়ী Simple, Complex অথবা Compound Sentence- এ রূপান্তর করতে বলা হবে। এ সাতটি Sentence-এর মধ্যে পাঁচটির উত্তর দিতে হবে। এর জন্য নম্বর থাকবে ৫। অর্থাৎ ১×৫=৫।

d. Passive construction : 

এক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্নপত্রে মোট ৭টি Sentence দেওয়া থাকবে।

সেগুলোকে Passive Voice-এ রূপান্তর করতে বলা হবে। ৭টি Sentence-এর মধ্য থেকে পাঁচটির উত্তর দিতে হবে । এর জন্য নম্বর থাকবে ৫ । অর্থাৎ ১×৫=৫ । 

e. Changing direct speech into indirect speech : 

এক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্নপত্রে সাতটি Detached Sentence দেওয়া থাকবে। সেগুলোকে Direct থেকে Indirect Speech-এ রূপান্তর করতে বলা হবে। ৭টি Sentence-এর মধ্য থেকে ৫টির উত্তর দিতে হবে। এর জন্য নম্বর থাকবে ৫ । অর্থাৎ ১×৫=৫ ৷

f. Framing negatives, questions & question tags : 

এক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্নপত্রে ৭টি Sentence দেওয়া থাকবে। সেগুলোকে Negative Questions ও Tag Question- এ রূপান্তর করতে হবে। ৭টি Sentence-এর মধ্যে ৫টির উত্তর দিতে হবে। এ জন্য নম্বর থাকবে ৫। অর্থাৎ ১×৫=৫ ।

g. Rewriting (using right form of verbs) : 

এক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্নপত্রে ৭টি Sentence দেওয়া থাকবে। প্রতিটি Sentence-এর ব্র্যাকেটে যে Verb দেওয়া থাকবে সে Verb-টির সঠিক রূপ ব্যবহার করে Sentence-গুলোকে পুনরায় লিখতে হবে। ৭টি Sentence-এর মধ্যে ৫টির উত্তর দিতে হবে। যার জন্য নম্বর থাকবে ৫। অর্থাৎ ১×৫=৫ ৷

Translation : Marks - 10

Translation অর্থ অনুবাদ । ইসলামি আরবি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রদত্ত ফাযিল শ্রেণির ইংরেজি সিলেবাসে Translation অংশের জন্য ১০ নম্বর বরাদ্দ রাখা হয়েছে। তবে এক্ষেত্রে দুটি Passage-এর Translation করতে হবে। প্রতিটির জন্য নম্বর থাকবে ৫ করে। যথা : 

a. Translating into English : 

এ অংশে প্রশ্নপত্রে একটি বাংলা অনুচ্ছেদ দেওয়া থাকবে । এটিকে ইংরেজিতে Translate করতে বলা হবে। এর জন্য নম্বর থাকবে ৫।

b. Translating into Bangla :

এ অংশে প্রশ্নপত্রে একটি ইংরেজি Para দেওয়া থাকবে। এটিকে বাংলায় অনুবাদ করতে বলা হবে। এর জন্য নম্বর থাকবে ৫।
