Mother Tongue and Foreign Language
It is not easy task, either to teach or to help a teacher to teach a foreign language. But for the teacher, there is a special difficulty that is not commonly considered: it is the difficulty of overcoming the barrier of the pupil's mother tongue. For the mother tongue acts as a block in all the learner's language reactions, and impedes the learning of the language because it is firmly seated as the first language. Indeed, the mother tongue is so much a part of our mental lives and of our unreflecting consciousness, as well as our automatic responses to experience, that usually we are not aware of language when we speak or listen or write. But in using a foreign language we cannot at first avoid being aware of language symbols, and of attending to words, sentences patterns and grammatical forms, instead of meanings. Thus, we see that using the mother tongue is a somewhat different linguistic process from first making use of a foreign language. This makes the task of the foreign language teacher a task that requires special procedures and technical methods.

মাতৃভাষা ও বিদেশি ভাষা
একজন শিক্ষককে কোনো একটা বিদেশি ভাষা শিক্ষা দেয়া বা শিক্ষা দানে সহায়তা করা খুব একটা সহজ কাজ নয়। কিন্তু শিক্ষকদের জন্য যে একটি বিশেষ সমস্যা আছে তা আজকাল আর বিবেচনা করা হয় না। শিক্ষার্থীর মাতৃভাষার সীমাবদ্ধতাকে অতিক্রম করাই হলো কঠিন কাজ। ভাষার প্রতিক্রিয়া হিসেবে শিক্ষার্থীদের কাছে মাতৃভাষা একটা বাধা হিসেবে কাজ করে কারণ প্রথম ভাষা হিসেবে এটা খুব দৃঢ়ভাবে প্রোথিত হয়ে থাকে। বাস্তবিকপক্ষে, মাতৃভাষা আমাদের মানসিক জীবনে, সচেতনতার সাথে এবং অভিজ্ঞতার প্রতি স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত প্রতিক্রিয়ার সাথে এত বেশি জড়িত যে, সচরাচর আমরা যখন আমাদের মাতৃভাষায় কথা বলি, শুনি বা লিখি তখন ততটা সতর্ক থাকি না। কিন্তু একটা বিদেশি ভাষার ব্যবহারে আমরা ভাষার প্রতীকের প্রতি অসতর্ক থাকতে পারি না, অর্থের পরিবর্তে শব্দ, বাক্যের গঠন ও ব্যাকরণগত দিক থেকে অসতর্ক থাকতে পারি না। এভাবে আমরা দেখি যে, মাতৃভাষা ব্যবহারের পদ্ধতি বিদেশি ভাষা প্রথমে ব্যবহারের পদ্ধতি থেকে কিছুটা ভিন্ন। এতে বিদেশি ভাষা শিক্ষাদানকারী শিক্ষককে কিছু বিশেষ কর্মপ্রণালী ও কারিগরি পদ্ধতির মাধ্যমে শেখানোর কৌশল আয়ত্ত করতে হয়।

Ans: Summarising:
The teaching of foreign language is a very difficult task. One's mother tongue acts as a block and impedes the learning of the foreign language. We are to be aware of language symbols, sentence patterns and grammatical forms when we use a foreign language. But in case of our mother language we need not be so aware.
