I don't say this is any spirit of selfishness. If a free people do not maintain their own freedom, they disgrace the fair name of free men and women all over the world. But the maintenance of freedom requires constant vigilance. Liberty does not descend upon a people, a people must raise themselves to it. It is a fruit that must be earned before it can be enjoyed. That freedom means freedom only from foreign domination is an outworn idea.
